Tick bites can kill an alpaca if left untreated. While doing my morning
check and feeding of my herd I noticed one of my Alpacas was lying next to my
buckling pen. At first, I thought how sweet she is keeping the boys
company. I quickly realized that something was wrong with Stormy.
When I approached her, she did not attempt to get up which is unusual. I
started checking her over and realized she could NOT stand up. With the
help of my son, we used a beach towel as a sling and were able to move Stormy
to a shaded area of the pasture. While
we were inspecting Stormy to see what might be causing the problem, we found a
few ticks on her and removed those, but what to do next?
A quick search online brought me to a solution. I dosed Stormy with Ivermectin paste and dusted her with python powder. I also gave her a few pumps of a power boost and attempted to give her a probiotic, but she quickly spat that out. Thankfully Stormy began to show improvement right away.
